Elyson Keith P. Encarnacion is the head of the Packaging Safety Laboratory (PSL) under the Department of Science and Technology – Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) of the Philippines. Currently, he is leading the country’s chemical research and testing of food contact articles and materials for safety assessment. His most recent studies focus on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in paper and other fiber-based packaging for takeaways and deliveries, phthalates in polyethylene and polypropylene packaging used by quick service restaurants (QSRs), and total UV-absorbing and residual contaminants migrating from monolayered plastics to different types of food simulants. His previous works include development and validation of analytical methods, production of food and drinking water reference materials for traceability measurements, and exposure estimation to heavy metals in agricultural and aquatic produce.
